While making the obvious acknowledgement that no social-scientific undertaking can be entirely value-free, I have recently suggested some of the difficulties that may arise when advocacy is combined with scholarship (see Edwards, 2004a). Widdowson (2004: 173) has also touched upon this point: ‘the proponents of CDA can be regarded as activists in that they are critical, but as discourse analysts they are academics. . it seems reasonable to be critical of their work, as discourse analysis, where it appears not to conform to the conventions of rationality, logical consistency, empirical substantiation and so on’.
6 The attention that CDA gives to the larger context is also dubious in practice, even though it is theoretically intended to connect broader social theory with fine-grained attention to discourse. Rogers et al. (2005) note that this is an emphasis that distinguishes it from the more purely ‘micro’ approaches of, say, conversational analysis. Of course, how the latter could, itself, be worth the candle without some sense of the norms and imperatives of conversational settings is a question worth asking, even if, as Rogers et al.
One of the most noticeable characteristics here is flatulent verbosity. Coser cites a hundred-word description (from Sudnow, 1972) that conveys the message that we should be careful when crossing the road. In a review of Garfinkel’s ‘seminal’ text, Coleman (1968: 130) succinctly observes that ethnomethodology involves ‘an extraordinarily high ratio of reading time to information transfer’. Just so. The particular linguistic offspring of ethnomethodology is conversation analysis. Although it is notoriously difficult to draw boundaries among the various approaches here, conversation analysis does attend more to the intricacies and mechanics of talk itself Á the sequencing of utterances, fluency and ‘smoothness’, the initiation and termination of conversational interchange, the rules and practices governing interruptions and interjections, the appropriateness of topics (and of the styles in which they are to be discussed) and the etiquettes of turn-taking Á whereas discourse analysis is (theoretically) more likely to place such matters within the broader scope of power and status relationships.
